What is grammar in English?
In an advanced level, grammar is being defined as “a system of rules that allow us to structure sentences.” It covers several main parts of English language, such as:
Parts of speech (verbs, adjectives, nouns, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, modifiers, etc.)
Clauses (e.g. independent, dependent, compound)
Punctuation (like commas, semicolons, and periods — when applied to usage)
Mechanics of language (like word order, semantics, and sentence structure)
Although studying grammar is overwhelming for so many people, it must be kept in mind that without these grammatical rules, chaos would rule. But let’s answer a very basic but essential question: Do we need to study grammar to learn a language? To answer briefly, “no”. As you see each person speaks their native language without having studied its grammar. Children start speaking without being aware that there is such a thing as “grammar.” But if you are intended to learn a new language and speak it fluently then the answer is “yes, grammar is a useful tool with which you can learn it more quickly and more efficiently.” When you know grammar then you will be able to understand many things without having to ask your teacher or google it. Therefore, to avoid disorder and boost our knowledge of a language we need to study and follow the rules. Then let’s think of grammar as something good, something positive, something that you can use to find your way – like a signpost or a map.
